Aurora talks with Andy Peloquin

What inspires you to write? What does your writing space look like?

My inspiration to write is that I just can’t stop!

I’m a bit of a writing addict, but I’ve found that writing gives me an outlet for the thoughts and feelings that build up in my brain. By putting them down onto paper, I can finally let them out–it’s like exhaling after holding your breath for a long time. I think that without writing, I’d got a bit insane. Or, insane-r than I already am. It takes a bit of crazy to be an author!

My writing space is a delicate mix between chaotic and ordered. While my desk is filled with a lot of stuff–notebooks, water bottle, printer, various mobile devices, coffee cup, and so on–everything is fairly neatly in its place. I can’t let the clutter pile up, but as long as things are in order, I’m able to focus on writing.

Please tell us a little about your books.

My books are fantasy in the most epic and dark sense. All of my stories focus on people, the things that drive them, the way they overcome their personal difficulties, the emotional journeys they go on. All of these journeys occur over the course of action-packed, thrilling, twisty-turny stories written to keep you flipping from one page to the next.

I like to walk the darker side of life–thieves, assassins, bounty hunters, con artists, criminals and people who aren’t your typical “heroes”. That way, when they come through and do something heroic, even their small actions are huge steps of progress.

I don’t shy away from violence, death, blood, loss, and emotional conflict, but all of these elements are germane to the story and critical for the development of both plot and characters.

What do you like to do to unwind?

I’m a bit of a TV-phile. I watch a lot of TV because it stops my brain from running a million miles an hour and lets me enjoy myself so much more than I can with books. Now that I write full time, it’s hard to stop nitpicking sentences on a page like I do with my own. Reading can feel like work, so it’s always nice to relax with a TV show. Plus, it gives me great ideas for my stories!

What would be your message to your readers?

A message of hope! No matter what, no matter how dark the situation, there is always a chance that things will get better. My stories delve into some dark stuff, but by the end, readers walk away with a sense of hopefulness, like the world is a slightly better place for the ordeal my characters endured, the challenges they overcome. I want you, the reader, to live with that idea firmly fixed in your mind–it does get better!
