Aurora talks to Nadine Millard

What inspires you to write? What does your writing space look like?

Writing has always been something I’ve done, since I was a little girl. I read a huge amount as a child, and still do as an adult! So books in general have played a big part in my life. I write historical because I live in Ireland surrounded by so much history, and so many romantic, ancient places it’s hard not to let the old imagination run riot around them!

When I released my first book, An Unlikely Duchess, in March 2014, my husband got me the cover on a canvas as a present and it became a tradition. Some of them are pictured and the rest are on the walls. My desk is minimalist and pretty much the only tidy space in a chaotic house of three children, a dog, and a cat! It’s a lot neater in the picture than it usually is. There are certainly a lot more coffee cups floating around on an ordinary day. But it’s the one place that’s my place and looking at my beautiful previous covers is motivation to keep doing what I love.

Please tell us a little about your books.

My books so far have all been regency period books. I just adore that time. The balls, the parties, the carriages. I’m fascinated by the rules that high society and the peerage lived by in the 19th century. Though I always find ways to bend those rules, especially for my heroines 😉

What do you like to do to unwind?

I read. A LOT. And I take an inordinate amount of bubble baths! My life is pretty hectic with three active children and a husband who travels quite a bit for work so any quiet time is much appreciated! I’m also lucky enough to live close to forests, waterfalls, and mountains galore so it’s always easy to find somewhere to walk and let your mind ramble.

What would be your message to your readers?

A big fat thank you, first of all! I can’t quite believe that I get to do this for a living and that is literally only possible because of my readers. And I really have the best most supportive readers in the world! I would say that I hope you continue to enjoy my writing, and that I appreciate every single one of you. I appreciate the reviews, the feedback, the interactions and friendships we’ve built. And long may it last!
